The idea for this website began with the creator, Matt Browning’s, personal Instagram feed, on which he began sharing photos of the independent bookstores he visited while traveling, using the hashtag #BookstoreExplorer. The posts proved popular, so he wondered, “What if I were to set up an entire account solely for bookstore exploring?”
That good idea led to another: a blog with full-length profiles of the stores featured on Instagram.
And THAT good idea led to yet another! “What if there’s a book in all of this?” he wondered. “There’s bound to be people like me, who would love to have an actual, honest-to-goodness book about indie bookstores to hold in their hands!”
Deciding to start with a manageable approach, Matt spent the better part of late 2018 and early 2019 scouring his home state of West Virginia, visiting, photographing, and learning about every indie bookstore in the state, as well as talking with writers, readers, and booksellers about what the independent bookstore means to them and to community. The finished product is currently in the publication pipeline, with a release planned for late 2019 or early 2020.
So keep an eye on the page for more information about BOOKSTORE EXPLORER: WEST VIRGINIA.
